“I feel the joy of living when hardships, sorrow, anger and resentment are transformed into paintings and beautifully existing.

My hope is that my work will become a moment of uneasiness or a trigger for viewers, but what is depicted is not an answer.” ——Mayumi Inukai

Mizuiro Workshop is pleased to present Mayumi Inukai’s fitst solo exhibition in Taiwan【回/KAI】. Born in Nagoya, Mayumi Inukai studied oil painting at Nagoya Art University where she gradually developed her own visual language by combining Western and Japanese paintings. One can easily find how she inherits the Japanese traditional aesthetics “miyabi (elegance)” in her practice - the human figures in her works possess an admirably sensitive and feminine quality accumulated by layers of delicate brushwork, yet an outburst of violence, lust and sorrow suddenly occupies the viewer’s mind.

Inukai believes that art should be the sum of life regardless of joy or sorrow; it has the power to transform them into a new state of reality. This is also how she feels alive. The new exhibition title 【回/KAI】has multiple meanings such as return, again, instance and frequency. 【回/KAI】 also means a circle of people who are connected to each other. As we are in the state being forced to reduce connection to such a drastic extent, our own shape of existence is in danger of being dissolved. “My act of painting has become the act of living itself. I hope my work will become a moment of uneasiness or a trigger for viewers, but what is depicted is not an answer. It is the time for works to connect people.” Inukai states.
